Addiction Treatment

PCP Addiction Treatment

PCP (angel dust) is a dissociative: it separates people from their own body, their fear, and sometimes from reality itself. The episodes are unpredictable, and often it is a family member watching them who finds this page. Whether it is you or someone you love, there is a way back to solid ground. Confidential outpatient care in Glendora.

Signs of PCP use and addiction

PCP effects swing widely with the dose, which is part of what makes it so dangerous. These are the patterns to watch.

During use

  • Detachment, numbness, or seeming "not there"
  • Blank stare, slurred speech, and loss of coordination
  • Feeling invincible or immune to pain
  • Paranoia, agitation, or sudden unpredictable behavior

Over time

  • Memory problems and confused thinking between uses
  • Depression, anxiety, and growing isolation
  • Flashback-like episodes or lingering unreality
  • Needing the detachment to cope with feelings at all

Crisis signs: act now

  • Hallucinations or delusions that do not fade after use
  • Talk of self-harm: call or text 988 right away
  • Violent agitation, injury, or overheating: call 911
  • Note: PCP is sometimes smoked unknowingly in laced marijuana

How we treat PCP addiction

PCP recovery is about coming back to reality safely and then making reality livable: treating the psychiatric symptoms the drug stirred up and the pain it was numbing, with steady structure around both.

A safety note: a person in a PCP crisis, severely agitated, injured, overheating, or detached from reality, needs emergency care, not an admissions call. Call 911 first and let them stabilize the situation; we can plan treatment as soon as the person is safe. If psychiatric stabilization or medically supervised care is needed before outpatient treatment, we help coordinate that step too. For thoughts of self-harm at any point, 988 is available by call or text, day and night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else? Call us, day or night.

What is PCP, exactly?

Phencyclidine, a dissociative drug originally developed as an anesthetic. It is usually smoked, sometimes on marijuana or tobacco, and also snorted or swallowed. Effects range from numb detachment and euphoria at lower doses to hallucinations, paranoia, and psychosis-like states at higher ones, and the same dose can hit differently on different days.

Someone in my family is in the middle of a PCP episode. What do I do?

If they are violent, badly overheated, injured, or completely detached from reality, call 911 and keep yourself safe; do not try to physically restrain them alone. Once the person is stable and safe, call us. We will help you plan the treatment conversation and next steps.

Will the psychosis-like symptoms go away?

For most people, symptoms clear as the drug leaves and abstinence holds, over days to weeks. In some cases symptoms persist longer or reveal an underlying condition that needs its own treatment. This is exactly what our dual diagnosis assessment untangles, and we will not guess when the honest answer is careful evaluation.

I think I smoked PCP without meaning to. Is that possible?

Yes. Marijuana laced with PCP, sometimes called wet or dust, does circulate, and a first terrifying dissociative experience is often how people discover it. One accidental exposure is not addiction, but if you have gone back to it or cannot shake the aftereffects, come talk to us.

Do I need detox to stop using PCP?

PCP withdrawal is usually not the medical danger; the drug effects and behavior during use are. Most people can start outpatient treatment directly. If someone needs psychiatric or medical stabilization first, we help coordinate it and begin treatment right after.

Does insurance cover PCP addiction treatment?

Most major PPO and HMO plans cover it. We verify your benefits for free, usually in minutes, with no obligation. We do not accept Medi-Cal at this time.
