Why sleep gets hard early on
As the body adjusts to life without a substance, the systems that run sleep have to rebalance. Trouble falling asleep, waking up often, or vivid dreams are all common in early recovery. It is uncomfortable, it is usually temporary, and it is not a sign that something is wrong with you.

Sleep is not a luxury in recovery; it is part of the treatment.

Practical ways to sleep better
- Keep the same sleep and wake time, even on weekends
- Get daylight and some movement during the day
- Wind down with a calm routine an hour before bed
- Keep the room dark, cool, and screen-free
- Ease up on caffeine after midday, and skip it late
- Do not use alcohol or other substances to fall asleep; it backfires
When to ask for help
If sleep stays difficult for weeks, tell your care team rather than trying to push through alone. There are therapies and, when appropriate, medications that help, and getting sleep on track early protects the rest of your recovery.

Is it normal to barely sleep in early recovery?
Very. Sleep problems are one of the most common early challenges as your body rebalances. For most people it improves over weeks, and the habits above speed it up. If it lingers, tell your care team.
Can I take something to help me sleep?
Talk to a clinician first. Some sleep aids are risky in recovery, but there are safe options and therapies that work. Avoid using alcohol or other substances to sleep, which worsens the cycle.
