What to Say to Someone Struggling With Addiction

You do not need the perfect speech. A few honest, non-judgmental words can open a door that pressure keeps shut.

Lead with love, not fear

People struggling with addiction usually expect judgment, so they brace for it. When you lead with care instead, you become someone safe to be honest with. That is worth more than any single argument you could win.

  • "I love you, and I am not going anywhere."
  • "I am worried about you, and it comes from caring, not judging."
  • "You do not have to have this figured out. I just want to understand."
  • "Whenever you are ready to talk, I am here."

Ask questions that invite honesty

Open questions beat accusations. They hand some control back to the person.

  • "How are you really doing?"
  • "What feels hardest right now?"
  • "What would actually feel like support to you?"
  • "Would you be open to talking with someone about it, together?"

Who are you here for?

A few quick taps, completely confidential. Answer right here on the page.

What to avoid

Even with the best intentions, some approaches close the door.

  • Ultimatums and threats you may not follow through on
  • Shaming, name-calling, or listing every past mistake
  • Talking to them while they are intoxicated; wait for a calm moment
  • Lecturing, or making the conversation about being right

After the conversation

One talk rarely changes everything, and that is okay. You planted something. Keep the door open, take care of yourself, and know that help is one call away, whenever they are ready or whenever you are ready to ask on their behalf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else? Call us, day or night.

What if they get angry or shut down?

That is common, and it is not a failure. Stay calm, do not match the anger, and let them know the door stays open. Sometimes the seed you plant takes root days or weeks later.

Should I bring up treatment in the first conversation?

Only if it feels natural. Often the first goal is simply to reconnect and be safe to talk to. You can mention that options exist and that you will help whenever they are ready, without turning it into a pitch.

Can I call you before I talk to them?

Yes. We can help you plan the conversation for your specific situation. Calling is confidential, and your loved one does not need to be part of it.

You do not have to do this alone.

Reach out today. Every call is confidential, and there is no pressure, just help.
